About So for example using a drawer controller attached to an external storage, vs attaching an external storage to each drawer individually would be much more efficient. One thing that would contribute is that AE encourages you to minimize network connections. Now, both AE2 and RS would do those calculations only when you place a block/cable and not for every crafting operation (for example) so in reality this wouldn't be a contributor to lag (since only things that are run constantly would contribute to lag). For AE2, though it needs to ask the additional question "is there a path, taking all the other devices into account, between the controller and the device." So both mods need to answer the question "is there a path from the controller to this device?" For RS, that's the end: either there is or there isn't. In the code, once you've found a path there's no overhead in actually sending a command from the controller to the device, it's not like it's actually sending physical packets of data.
